I went back to the Apple store, had them install Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) and also ordered a fresh Snow Leopard install disk (my original install disk was Leopard, IIRC). Shrank the Mac OS X partition and installed Fedora (21) from DVD.
